Forthcoming Publication: Crotchet Castle & Gryll Grange

Crotchet Castle and Gryll Grange Available Now

We are delighted to announce the forthcoming publication of the next title in our P-Wave Classics series: Crotchet Castle & Gryll Grange by Thomas Love Peacock, which will be released on 23 October.

Readers can now take a look inside the book on the P-Wave Press website and elsewhere, and pre-order the ebook edition. The book is also available on NetGalley for reviewers and librarians.

This new volume is particularly exciting, as it brings together Peacock’s two final and most accomplished novels. Crotchet Castle (1831) and Gryll Grange (1861) see the novelist at the height of his powers, offering sparkling satire and incisive social commentary while retaining the wit, music and conviviality that make his work so distinctive.

In Crotchet Castle, Peacock gathers an eccentric company of characters—philosophers, reformers, poets and idealists—under the hospitable roof of the wealthy Mr Crotchet. Their debates and misadventures range widely, skewering the pretensions of politics, fashion and scholarship, while revealing Peacock’s delight in argument, convivial dining and playful exaggeration.

Three decades later, with Gryll Grange, Peacock returned to the form one last time, producing his most mature and polished work. Centred on the cultured household of Mr Gryll and his spirited niece Morgana, the novel blends romance with satire, bringing together a parade of philosophers, antiquarians, dreamers and diners. The conversations may be playful, but they also reflect Peacock’s lifelong engagement with the pressing ideas and controversies of his age—from reform and industrial progress to the place of women in society.

Together, these novels mark the culmination of Peacock’s unique contribution to English literature. With their mixture of wit, erudition and gentle mockery, they exemplify his ability to entertain while stimulating thought, ensuring his work remains as fresh and engaging today as it was in the nineteenth century.

With Crotchet Castle and Gryll Grange, P-Wave Classics has now brought six of Peacock’s seven novels back into print. While our next volumes will feature other authors, we are committed to returning to Peacock in the future—not only to complete his novels but also to present his letters and other writings to a new audience.

We look forward to sharing this handsome new edition with you on 23 October, and to continuing our journey through the rich and varied landscape of classic literature.
