The Joy of Discovery in the Classics

A recent report in The Bookseller highlighted a growing interest in classics, driven by BookTok and by readers’ sheer joy of discovery. While much of the discussion has focused on twentieth-century literature—particularly women’s writing—we at P-Wave Press feel that same excitement for an earlier moment of radical creativity: the end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth century.

This was a period of upheaval. Political revolutions, industrial change and shifting social structures created an environment in which writers began to question the very foundations of society. Traditions and restrictions that had long seemed immovable were suddenly subject to intense scrutiny, and the results on the page were startlingly fresh.

Women who seized this moment, and the surge of female voices was remarkable, producing novels whose clarity, directness and modernity still resonate powerfully today. Male writers, too, took up the challenge, seeking to redress the inequities of the time, and creating strong female characters and questioning why women should be confined to the narrow, patronising roles society had assigned them. Across class and gender, literature became a space for bold new ideas, playful experiments and sharp social commentary.

That is why our P-Wave Classics series champions works from this transformative period. These books are not simply relics of their time: they are vibrant, challenging and often startlingly relevant to our own, as the three playful yet sharply satirical sets of novels by Thomas Love Peacock that open the imprint show. We share the same joy of discovery that readers today are finding in other classics, and we are delighted to open the door to more of these works, especially by female writers, in the months ahead.

We hope you will join us in exploring this rich literary landscape as we continue to expand the P-Wave Classics series—reviving voices that deserve to be heard and celebrating stories that still have the power to question, challenge and inspire.
